What to do & see

About Vík:

Vík or Vík in Mýrdal is the most southern village in Iceland and located on the main road around Iceland. It is about 180 km (110 miles) from Reykjavík and it takes about 2 – 2.5 hours to drive from Reykjavík. Although it has only between 300-400 inhabitants it is the largest settlement for some 70 km (43 miles) around and is an important staging post, thus it is indicated on road signs from a long distance away. It is an important service center for the inhabitants and visitors to the coastal strip between Skógar and the west edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacial outwash plain. It has one of the 10 most beutiful beaches in the world. There you can also find amongst other attractions, Reynisfjall, Reynisdrangar and see the bird species, Puffins in the cliffs.

Vík lies directly south of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918, and this longer than typical dormant period has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon.
